High Alps
High-elevation alpine diving in small mountain lakes and artificial reservoirs used for hydroelectric power.
The Swiss High Alps offer a very different freshwater diving experience: cold, high-elevation lakes surrounded by steep mountain terrain. Many of these waters are relatively small, and a large part of accessible sites are artificial reservoirs built for hydroelectric energy production.
Why dive in the High Alps?
- Dramatic mountain scenery above and below the surface
- Unique high-altitude diving conditions
- Quiet and little known remote site
What to consider?
- Most dives require drysuit and proper thermal protection all year
- Altitude affects dive planning, so use altitude-aware tables or computer settings
- Conditions can change quickly because of weather in the mountains
- Reservoir water levels may vary due to energy production and season
- Access roads, parking, and entry points can be limited in remote valleys
- Diving artificial waters used for energy production requires official consent
