Rhein

River diving on the Swiss-German border with walls, washed-out canyons, and rich freshwater fish life.

The High Rhine section near the Swiss-German border offers a different type of Swiss freshwater diving than the lakes: moving water, river-cut structures, and dynamic conditions. Around Rheinau, the river forms deeper channels, steep edges, and undercut areas that create interesting habitats for fish and night dives.

This region is popular because access is relatively easy and visibility can be very good, but river conditions require discipline. Current, seasonal flow changes, and boat traffic must always be part of your dive planning.

After recent fatal accident, diving in the sections of Rhine with ship traffic require permission, and can be done only under guidance of local dive groups.

Safety focus for Rhine dives

  • Never dive during high water or strong flow
  • Plan entry and exit points before entering the water
  • Use surface signaling and stay aware of boat traffic
  • Keep groups small and maintain strict buddy procedures
  • Check if permission and notice to the local authorities is required
